"educators who incorporate social media into the classroom can make lessons more relevant and meaningful"
I agree with this statement. Lessons should be developed with the help of social media.
I and my friend had a conversation about Facebook yesterday. We talked about things like: we are living our lives in Facebook, we are the Facebook generation, Facebook is a blog or a virtual diary.
I don’t have a categorical stand on the use of social media in the classroom because I believe that every individual has different needs. However, there was something in the text I completely agree with: “[S]tudents simply use the sites to procrastinate and catch up with friends.” Social networking is often a massive inducement to procrastinate.
It was an interesting article indeed, although I have some doubts about Facebook being used in education. I somehow feel that it's not professional enough for academic tasks, mainly because it's rather considered to be a way of procrastination, as Árpád has pointed out as well. However, there are other methods of using social media in the classroom, one of which I read an article about that you can read in my blog: http://eltemedia.blogspot.com/
